TONGUE TIE AND FEEDING SUPPORT SERVICES
Tongue tie and feeding support involves assessing and managing tongue tie issues that may affect breastfeeding. I provide guidance on recognising signs of tongue tie, support for effective feeding techniques, and if necessary, referrals for further treatment. My goal is to help ensure a smooth and comfortable feeding experience for both you and your baby.

What Is What is Tongue Tie?
Tongue tie, or ankyloglossia, occurs when the lingual frenulum—the tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth—is shorter or tighter than usual. This restricts the tongue’s movement.

Signs of Tongue Tie in Babies/Infants:
Babies: Difficulty latching or staying attached during feeding, prolonged feeding times, excessive dribbling, coughing, choking, clicking noises while feeding, taking small amounts of milk, or struggling with weight gain.
Mothers: Painful feeding, supply issues, nipple trauma (cracking or bleeding), engorgement, blocked ducts, or mastitis.

What to Expect During the Tongue Tie Assessment:
We will examine your baby’s mouth while they are wrapped in a thin blanket, with assistance needed to hold their head. The assessment includes checking the palate, tongue function, and mobility
Treatment
If necessary, a division of the tongue tie is performed using sterile scissors, followed by a brief period of pressure to stop any bleeding. The procedure is quick, usually taking only a few minutes.
Pain & Aftercare
The procedure is similar in pain to an injection—briefly uncomfortable but with minimal ongoing pain. Babies typically cry for a short time and are comforted with cuddles and feeding. For babies over 8 weeks, liquid paracetamol (Calpol) can be given if needed. For those under 8 weeks, consult your GP for dosage advice.
If My Baby Is Gaining Weight, Is Tongue Tie Division Necessary?
Decisions about tongue tie division consider individual circumstances beyond just feeding issues. We also evaluate maternal comfort and nipple condition, the baby's feeding frequency, and the overall function of the tongue, which impacts speech and oral hygiene.
